Solar PV

The word photovoltaics was first mentioned around 1890, and it comes from the Greek words: photo, ‘phos,’ meaning light, and ‘volt,’ which refers to electricity. Photovoltaic, therefore, means light-electricity, describing exactly the way photovoltaic materials and devices work.

Photovoltaics (PV) are best known as a method for generating electric power by using solar cells to convert energy from the sun into a flow of electrons by the photovoltaic effect. Solar cells produce direct current electricity from sunlight which can be used to power equipment or to recharge a battery.

Contrary to the general thought, PV’s do not necessarily use direct sunlight to function, some light is enough for the system to work. Therefore, investing in photovoltaics can provide electricity during summer and winter months. However, PV efficiency is directly proportional to the levels of light receive, making them more efficient during longer hours of daylight in the summer.

Solar PV panels have immense benefits as energy from the sun is clean and endless. PV panels lower your carbon footprint and reducing your energy bills saving money, they are environmentally friendly and benefit from their independence from the national grid.

Dundee’s Award winning Princes Street integrated Hub broke the mold being the first of its kind in the UK, an extremely ambitious EV infrastructure project, it offering the EV equivalent of todays fuel stations. The hub was opened in July 2018 and described at a European EV forum as “A globally significant development in electric vehicle charging“ consisting of multiple EV chargers and complemented with solar canopies and battery storage renewables (see Projects – Dundee Case Study).

It was hailed as a first of its kind in the UK to involve renewable energy optimisation. This process ensures the best use of on-site photovoltaic (PV) which provides 36kw of power with the battery renewable solution allowing 90kWh of storage capacity. The system reduces demand from the national grid at peak times and takes advantage of reduced off-peak charging tariffs.

The innovative Dundee Hub at Princes Street combined EV chargers, Energy Storage and PV canopies taking EV infrastructures in the UK to the next level becoming the benchmark for others to follow. Boyd Brothers are very proud to have supported Dundee City Council and played our part in such a groundbreaking design and build.
